Melvin Willis is the right choice for the Richmond City Council for District 1, which includes the Iron Triangle and Belding/Woods neighborhoods.
Election Day is November 5, 2024, and ballots will be mailed to all registered voters in early October.
Why I'm Running
I am a current Richmond City Councilmember running for reelection in District 1.
I don’t accept campaign money from corporations or developers.
As a Richmond City Councilmember (2016-2020 and 2020-2024), I voted to:
- Increase minimum wage to $15
- Fully enforce the rent control protections passed by voters
- Stop sharing information about immigrants with ICE
- “Ban the Box” so the formerly incarcerated can rejoin our community
- Protect the shoreline from developers so it can be used by all
- Guarantee funding for children’s and youth programming in Richmond
- Suspend all rent and mortgage payments during the shelter in place for COVID-19
Richmond today is safer, healthier and more prosperous than when I was born. The improvements are due to the work of progressive people and organizations who came together to set the city on a better path. As a Councilmember and a housing-rights community organizer, I am proud to be part of this alliance.
Nevertheless, there is more work to do, and the gains we have made are at risk. We face local and federal attacks on working families, women, people of color, immigrants and the environment. We run the risk of becoming two cities, divided by race, wealth, health and opportunity -- or a city where people who are not affluent are pushed out completely.
I believe there is a better future for Richmond, one in which we all rise together.
My commitment is to work with you to increase affordable housing, to improve wages and skills, to protect the environment, to secure a local hospital, and to expand opportunities for youth.

Actualmente soy concejal de la ciudad de Richmond y me postulo para la reelección en el Distrito 1.
No acepto dinero de campaña de corporaciones e inversionistas.
Mi lealtad es solo para los votantes de Richmond.
Como concejal de la ciudad de Richmond (2016-2020 and 2020-2024), voté a favor de:
- Aumentar el salario mínimo a $ 15
- Hacer cumplir plenamente las protecciones de control de alquileres aprobadas por los votantes
- Dejar de compartir información sobre inmigrantes con ICE
- "Prohibir la caja" para que los encarcelados anteriormente puedan unirse a nuestra comunidad.

Sin embargo, hay más trabajo por hacer y las ganancias que hemos logrado están en riesgo. Enfrentamos ataques locales y federales contra familias trabajadoras, mujeres, personas de color, inmigrantes y el medio ambiente. Corremos el riesgo de convertirnos en dos ciudades, divididas por raza, riqueza, salud y oportunidades, o una ciudad donde las personas que no son ricas son expulsadas por completo.
Creo que hay un futuro mejor para Richmond, uno en el que todos nos levantemos juntos.
